What is the Working With Children Check?
The Working With Children Check is a pre-employment check for child-related employment. This also applies to people over 18 living in the home of family day carers, authorised carers (foster carers) or other home based carers. The Working With Children Check is only completed with the consent of the person being Checked.
Why a Certificate? If you are a self employed person aged 18 years or older whose work meets our definition of child-related employment, you need to apply for a certificate to show you do not have a criminal record that makes you a prohibited person. It is an offence for prohibited persons to apply for or attempt to obtain, undertake or remain in child-related employment in any capacity, whether paid, volunteering or self employed. After 1 May 2011, penalties will apply if you do not have a valid Certificate.
